“Let fate find us prepared and active” – Seneca |
Seneca is a man who knew a thing or two about being prepared. In his mid-20’s, he left Rome for a decade in Egypt to heal from what was likely asthma, after already suffering from a bout of Tuberculosis. En route back to Rome, his uncle was killed in a shipwreck and he was unexpectedly given a seat in the Roman Senate. Then, his son died and he was exiled by Emperor Claudius only to be recalled to Rome by Nero who then ordered him to commit suicide. That’s a lot of fate coming down on one man throughout his life. We all have our challenges, our shortcomings, our setbacks and our wins. But fate has a funny way of keeping us on our toes. Setbacks provide opportunities and success may hide unintended consequences. The goal is to be prepared for either, and active in our own lives. And believe me, I’m writing this as a reminder to myself as much as it is to you. How can we be better prepared? – Be physically capable of the demands placed on you. – Anticipate unintended consequences and make contingency plans. – Become active in your own rescue, take control of what you can. For me, journaling has been a big help in getting prepared and active. Your way might be different. Do what works for you. |
